The 2009 Polaris Sportsman 550 XP marked a significant evolution in Polaris's utility ATV lineup. Released as part of the XP (Xtreme Performance) series, the 550 XP was built for riders who needed a balance of power, comfort, and durability—whether for trail riding, hunting, farm work, or general recreation. It was introduced alongside the larger 850 XP model but offered a slightly more manageable package with impressive capabilities of its own.

The Sportsman 550 is powered by a 549cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, 4-stroke engine. While not as aggressive as its bigger sibling, the 550 delivers smooth, consistent power that’s ideal for both work and play. Polaris tuned the engine for low-end torque, making it suitable for hauling, towing, or navigating rugged terrain.

One of the standout features of the 550 XP is the redesigned chassis and suspension. Polaris introduced a new, lighter frame that improves handling and durability. Dual A-arm suspension at both front and rear provides 9 inches of front travel and 10.25 inches in the rear—exceptional numbers for its class in 2009. Combined with a high ground clearance of over 11 inches, the Sportsman 550 easily tackles uneven, rocky, or muddy terrain.
