The XSR900 uses an 847cc inline 3-cylinder engine, a crossplane-inspired design that aims to combine torque-rich midrange with smooth power delivery. It produces approximately 115 horsepower and 65 lb-ft of torque, with power coming on strongly in the midrange and continuing steadily through the top end. The three-cylinder setup gives the bike a distinctive engine character, offering both responsiveness and a degree of smoothness not always found in twins.

The 6-speed gearbox is paired with a slipper clutch, which reduces rear-wheel chatter during aggressive downshifting and contributes to a more manageable ride under braking. Throttle response is managed electronically via Yamaha’s ride-by-wire system, offering three different riding modes that adjust power delivery—ranging from aggressive to more subdued.
